Joey's Story

Joey
Age 14
Renown Children's Hospital
Traumatic Brain Injury

To say that Joey is a sports enthusiast is an understatement. An active child, Joey was once involved with sports every month of the year and had hopes of becoming a professional athlete. But when a logging accident left Joey with serious brain injuries, he embarked on a different, and more significant, path.

A neurologist told Joey’s family he would need a miracle to survive. Joey’s family wouldn’t accept anything less. After 60 days in the intensive care unit and months of recovery, Joey pulled through.

Today, Joey travels in a motorized wheelchair, having lost 90 percent of his mobility. But he remains involved in sports and helps coach his middle school basketball team. His personality and sense of humor make him a natural leader, the perfect role model for athletes seeking to become someone great.
